Q: "Do I have to speak in Tongues to be saved?"

"Do Rabbinical Jews believe in the infilling of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues?

Answer:

It is generally accepted amongst Christians and Hebraic Roots Restorers,  that the Holy Spirit outpouring and related evidence in the New Testament is "something new which did not exist in Old Testament times".  From a proper comparison though, of both the Tanach ('Old' Testament according to Christians) and the New Testament, it seems  that very little has changed since Page 1 of the Bible!

The "speaking in strange tongues" referred to in the NT, is often presented as evidence of such a 'new' spiritual phenomenon.  It is also presented as a vital requirement for believers to confirm that they are truly in the correct faith.  "Without it, you are 'not yet there", the seem to insinuate.

One remarkable quote from the long list of Tanach references to the "Spirit of the Most High',  is the following:

Isaiah 11:2   "The Spirit of YHVH will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the YHVH -"

Thus, it is the Spirit of YHVH that brings us wisdom, understanding, power and knowledge.  So often NT believers desire the outward signs of the Spirit, like healing, miracles and "speaking in tongues" - surely wisdom and knowledge are the more valuable spiritual assets for us as pilgrims?  All the outer signs will be of no avail for finding the True Way, which knowledge and understanding and wisdom can attain for us?

The 2nd outstanding confirmation from the Tanach is:

Zechariah 7:12   "They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that YHVH Almighty had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. So  YHVH Almighty was very angry."

How powerful and revealing this text! - to reveal to us that:

- we can oppose His Spirit with our hardened hearts and blocked ears!

- The Law had already been sent by the Power of His Spirit through the early Prophets - long before Messiah

So,  now we face a few questions:

- WHAT is so different that YAHU'SHUAH has brought us, as alleged by so many Messianic believers? - i.e. that which "the Jews never had", that which "was not applicable in OT times"?

- is the Spirit which He promised, that would "make us observe His Laws" not the same Spirit that moved the ancient Bible Prophets?

- what is so 'new' in the Pentecost outpouring that Christians and Messianics lay claim to, which they claim makes them different to anything that was before?

The sobering answers to these questions, will reveal to us:

- that the "New" Covenant is not totally different from the 'Old" Covenant, so as to do away with most (if not all) that the Old Covenant entailed, as the Church teaches.  .

- that the "fruits of the Spirit" is not something new, which had been  specially granted to those who accepted Messiah, in order to allegedly "put them on a separate or holier level than the Jews under the 'Old' Covenant".

The long list of texts from the Tanach, tell us that the Spirit of YHVH was as active and fruit bearing in Tanach times as in NT times.

Those believers who ignore this fact or who undervalue its significance, completely miss the wonder of the 'Salvation' of YAHU'SHUAH, namely that He renewed these ever existing Spirit Blessings of YHVH with those rebellious souls who formerly rejected His Covenant and His Grace. His Sacrifice offers reconciliation to stray and seeking souls in the wilderness and "exiled amongst the nations", to renew them to His Eternal Covenant, from which He had never yet rejected Judah. He granted His Eternally Fresh and New ever Living Spirit renewedly to true seekers - the SAME Spirit which all righteous striving souls of all times had always been blessed with.

It is the destructive and soul destroying spirit of 'Replacement theology', which claims 'new' changed spiritual 'blessings which had never been granted before.'  This arrogant claim goes even further and rejects the Spirit that has been leading Judah throughout history unto this day, and which now claims sole rights to this 'new exclusive spiritual blessings'.

It is this reasoning which endangers one's soul!

Reading the context of Isaiah 11:2  (mentioned above), reveals from verse 10 onwards, that YAHU'SHUAH will bring the exiles of Israel back and re-unite them, thereby achieving the following Wonder:
Isa. 11:13  "Then Ephraim's (10-Israel's) jealousy (against Judah) will come to an end and Judah's enemies be put down;  Ephraim will no longer be jealous of Judah, nor Judah any longer the enemy of Ephraim ..."  They will be ONE of mind and belief again, re-united in the One Eternal Covenant with YHVH. Refer The Great Return

THIS is what we should be working and striving for.
